One day, a nuisance idiot on a site called 4chan decided - as a joke - that he would say that the okay sign was a symbol for white supremicism. Such is the madness of the day, that instead of laughing and moving on, more idiots believed them, and now, if you look it up, you are advised not to use it. It is 'problematic,' some say. Other sites frankly call it a hate symbol, or even Nazi.

Like a lot of nonsense invented by the Politically Correct brigade, it has caused harm.
According to the article, link below, an actor was fired for using this harmless gesture.
And it is harm, too, to tell us we cannot use this common symbol
that has been around for hundreds of years.

I intend to treat the suggestion
that we take care when using it as a joke.

And then, after a time, maybe the rot about it being racist will be forgotten.

Madness! The people who are advocating that we should avoid using it ought to be ashamed of themselves. Instead of encouraging and enabling stupidity, why are they not working to eradicate it?
ReplyDeleteI will continue to use this sign when I choose. Besides anything else, this is a common and necessary hand signal for diving, and in any other situation where you need to communicate "ok" clearly and your voice can't be heard.
It's a standard sign when skin diving as well.
